High School Placement Process

The Middle School Head, Michael Thompson, works closely with students, parents, and teachers in the careful selection and application to secondary schools. Keys students who choose to apply to independent or private schools usually have several choices available to them. Public and private schools welcome our graduates, as they are well prepared, confident, posses a strong sense of self and an openness to new experiences.

Through the high school process, Keys helps 8th graders and their parents think about choices for secondary school—both independent and public. We provide information about high schools, help families understand the application process, and offer structure and support along the way.

In the spring of 7th grade, Mr. Thompson meets with parents and students to talk about the high school selection process. At this time, he also distributes a "Keys Guide to the High School Admission Process," handbook and timeline to help parents understand the details involved in looking at and applying to high schools. Over the summer, families meet with Mr. Thompson individually to discuss their hopes and expectations for their child's next school. During the 8th grade year, the students meet regularly with Mr. Thompson to go over applications, shadowing information, interview techniques, essay writing, test preparation and other aspects throughout the process.

Ordinarily, parents and students begin asking schools for admissions information in the summer before 8th grade or early in the fall of 8th grade, and apply to schools in the fall and winter. We suggest that students consider a range of schools, determine appropriate fit and then apply to these schools. Along with the guidance on the application to private/independent schools, we work closely with students and families on exploring the range of public and charter schools. Once students have made and been accepted to their secondary school, we work on the transition process, including placement tests and course recommendations and discussing the various aspects of the transition to high school.
